Looking for Flooring?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Thursday 1 October 2009 8:37 am

If your flooring is getty tatty it is time to make a decision on what to do with it. Making that decision often will depend on the room that requires the work. End of line products can help to make fantastic savings for covering small areas. Bathrooms and kitchens require durable materials due to the traffic and the exposure to moisture.

Amtico flooring is a high quality floor product. These tiles are non-porous, long lasting with exeptional colour fastness which means the tiles retain stunning aesthetic appeal for years to come. Let’s look into the reasons why flooring tiles are a perfectly good alternative.

For kitchen and bathroom areas popular choices include laminate, vinyl and resin compound tiles. The main differences is that laminate tends to be thicker and give a more realistic wood effect without the cost of real wood.

Vinyl comes in a wood effect too and you might be amazed at the sheer number of colours, patterns and styles you can get. You could turn your kitchen floor into a chessboard for the kids or have completely different coloured tiles in your own pattern in your bathroom, toilet or laundry. No longer is vinyl required to be in one standard colour like it was many years ago. Flooring products have improved greatly over the last decade or so along with the colour, style, finish and cost options available.

Your first decision relates entirely to your budget. For cost efficient options laminate and vinyl are the two most desirable choices. The cheapest option tends to be laminate tiles although vinyl and other similar resin compound tiles can also come in at reasonable prices and there tends to be a much wider choice in style too.

Many people would love to be able to use real wood or real marble for their flooring but overall the cost factor usually makes this out of the question. Don’t despair as there are many vinyl and laminate options that give you that look of wood or marble but without the price tag. There is no comparison in quality but the finished results can be impressive to say the least.

There are of course real wood or marble options for the areas of your house, again it all comes down to what it is you are looking for that will suit your home and of course the all important costs involved.

Immitation floor tiles have many benefits and you will often find they are manufactured to be very easy to clean and low maintenance and many also have excellent durability.

Vinyl often comes in large sheets as well as tiles so you can choose the look that suits your specific area of the house. There are many colour and finish options in vinyl, laminate and resin compound tiles that it might take a long time choosing which colour would look best.

If you want to re-floor a small area look out for sales at local suppliers. They will often have a clearance sale for products they have over-stocked on or those that are ‘end of range’. You can often pick up excellent bargains on high quality floor tiles this way. They do not always have the exact amount you want however so be careful if you want to floor a larger area of your house.

Just make sure you do your research, find out what special offers are available especially for the smaller areas such as the bathroom/WC. There are so many great deals to be found if you look for them.

Things You Need to Know about Laminate Flooring

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 10 August 2009 11:05 am

Although carpet and hardwood are two of the most popular choices when it comes to flooring, they are sometimes unsuited.  Spaces like the kitchen, or garage, frequently demand a greater degree of durability and resilience.  Carpet is susceptible to dirt and stains, leading to a dirty looking surface that may also attract odors.  Hardwood offers a great deal more durability than carpet, but it also falls prey to moisture.  A wet hardwood gradually warps and cracks.  After several years of expansion and contraction, moisture damage can become very apparent with a hardwood floor.

Areas in which spills and accidents are frequent can cause scratching or gouging in the flooring as well.  Laminate flooring is a great answer to all these problems and more.  With a laminate floor, decorators can have the aesthetic allure of hardwood, while avoiding many of the typical pitfalls.  Laminate flooring is very resilient when it comes to moisture issues and will not absorb water.  Stains are not an issue, and with prompt clean up, should not leave a mark at all.
Best of all, laminate flooring is very well priced, and can be found in a wide range of shades, colors, and styles.

Laying down laminate flooring is also fairly simple.  As soon as a set of tiles can be unwrapped, check each to ensure that each tile is intact.  Once sure that all the tiles are in good condition, give the tiles a few days to adjust to their new atmosphere.  There may be some contraction or expansion that occurs when the laminate flooring tiles arrive in a new setting.

Make certain to follow all manufacturer guidelines that are included with the tile packaging.  Specific instructions on how to glue the tiles are very important, and can affect the overall aesthetic quality and durability of the end product.  It is also important to ensure that the tiles are placed with a quarter of an inch space between the wall and the flooring.  Although a great deal of tools isn’t required for in home installation, you may have to cut the tiles to fit around corners, fireplaces, stairs, etc.  A wet tile saw would provide all the cutting power needed for laminate flooring.

Having a level surface for installation is also crucial.  Be certain to fill any holes in the subflooring, or sand away any protruding areas that might stick up afterward.

Basics: How To Use Paint Color In Your Interior Design

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 18 March 2009 11:36 am

If what you want is a great and simple way to change your interior design, you should consider paint. It’s an inexpensive way to change the look and feel of a room. The first thing you will need to know is what paint color works best.

You should think about the room you plan to paint and how you mainly use it first. Even though there are colors that will only look good in specific rooms, there are no rules in choosing the right color. It’s not common for a kitchen to be painted pink, though finding that color in a bathroom or bedroom is quite common. Additionally the main living spaces in homes tend to be neutral colors. When picking out the best color for you, remember that the closest things to rules in interior design, are guidelines. While making your choice be sure to base it on your own style mostly.

Next, think about the way the rooms are designed throughout your household. Usually in Victorian style households, casual pastels, social, or polished colors tend to be not only suitable but pretty common. Neutral or casual base colors would likely go best in modern houses.

You should think about what kind of mood you want to put people in when they enter the room? If you want colors that seem to give more energy to the house, you should consider looking for a blue or red shade that works best for you (remember when using red it may be best done in moderation). If you’re really lost in this decision making process designers such as those at interior design central london can help you flesh out your needs.

Finally, use magazines and catalogs for inspiration. In those magazines, which designs were you more fond of, put you more at ease, gave you more of a welcome feeling? How often was the same color used on the walls? Perhaps you have always had the same neutral colors in your house but find that you are more partial to the red hues and designs you found in the catalog. You may want to think about increasing the amount of color in your home if that happens to you.

If you use your imagination and your own sense of what just “feels right” in your rooms, you will be able to choose the perfect paint color for your walls, giving your interior a whole new feel.

4 Pointers For Building Your Home’s Flat Roof

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 18 March 2009 11:36 am

The different kinds of flat roofs are Asphalt, turbo seal, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, ethylene propylene, modified bitumen, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyolefin, and modern membrane roof solutions. Flat roofs are responsive to human movement or the weather and cracks on the flat roof are a danger to the house. People should thus be careful while employing such rooftops as a living or entertainment area.

Flat roofs have one specific advantage over slanting or angled roofs in that the space above the roof can be turned into a garden or recreational area.  They are also easy to remodel and allow for convenient installation of solar panels should one decide to use these.

Some Pointers for New Flat Roofs

It is essential to attain regulatory approval from building authorities before starting work on a new flat roof since factors like the weight of the building material, span of the roof and snow landings must be taken into account to make the roof safe.  As explained at flat roof repairs the flat roof should customarily have a slight decline to drain water and snow from the roof surface.

Flat Roof Materials

The usual tar and gravel materials are still frequently used to build flat roofs. Despite the fact that there are very effective sealants available on the market today, the roof covering material should be of superb quality so that it can be laid as a sheet which makes the development of cracks less probable.  For timber flat roofs, the wood will no doubt be necessary along with a waterproof covering of course, since wood is not waterproof.  Modern liquid membranes such as Polyroof 185 are deemed as long lasting on the British Board of Agreement (BBA) listings, a body known to be a influential authority on roofing standards. See epdm roof for more information on flat roof materials.

Ensure a Long Life Span for Your Flat Roof

The life span of a flat roof is dependent on the type of maintenance given to the roof and at what intervals.  Some assessors say a maximum of 10 years.  Assembling the roof accurately  will lessen probability of corrections that impair the structure.  It is consequently crucial to have it done accurately right from the start.  Use high quality materials that are hard wearing.  Always make sure it stays clean and dry.  Drain any accumulation of water or snow quickly, if necessary by increasing the number of water drains and/or scuppers. Always fix cracks and leaks as soon as possible. Maintenance further requires restoring the delaminations, blisters or creases formed on the roof, whether they are leaking or not.  At present, infrared technology is used to take pictures at night to locate trouble spots in order to repair them right away.

Why use a substandard furnace filter when you can run the electrostatic furnace filter using electrostatic styling that is state-of-the-art?  You can buy an electrostatic furnace filter at a variety of online outlets?  Although that this is a top of the line 3M furnace filter, you will still have to change it periodically so that it can keep the furnace in good working order.  Cleaning your furnace is not too hard, especially when you put in an electrostatic furnace filter, one of the most useful furnace filters that you could choose.

Painting a Room For The First Time

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Tuesday 13 January 2009 9:58 pm

Enjoy your home improvement projects, there is certainly no need for tesrs

If You Want To paint your home and you have never tackled anything this big in the past.Read these few helpful suggestions before you start. I’m sure you know many people who will offer suggestions along the way.

Lighter colour schemes will enhance the space in smaller rooms. If it is a large space, then you can put more intense colours on the walls without feeling hemmed in. Similarly, if the room does not get too much light, then, the place can be brightened by using lighter coloures with an eggshell finish. Using white though can make the place look stark and clinical – and it very quickly becomes grubby. Another reason to use eggshell paint is that it does accept the occasional wipe down. an important consideration when you have youn children.

Having searched though all those colour charts, and made your colour choice, the next decision is if you are going to employ a contractor to do the work or do it yourself. If you are going to  do it yourself, the easiest option is to paint the walls (and windowframes and doors). It is also a lot less expensive than wallpaper so it is much less a disaster if you do not like the result, and have to redo it.

The key to a good finish is preparation-preparation-preparation. Before you start, empty your room of as much furniture as you can. Anything that can’t be removed should be covered with plenty of sheets. This applies to carpets too. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned so that you remove the accumulated grease and grime. Next fill any small holes or cracks in wall with filler, if they are larger holes, do them in two or three layers. The filler will usually shrink as it dries. Give it 24hours to fully dry, then rub it down thoroughly with sandpaper  so it is very smooth. Next, smooth all the woodwork with sandpaper. Make sure the woodwork is smooth and dust free, where possible cutting right back to bare wood.

Now start at the top and work downwards. Paint the ceiling first. Wait until it fully dry before starting on anything else. Next place masking tape at the very edge of the ceiling so that you get a very straight line when you paint the walls. Do not leave the masking tape on for to long, it will be difficult to get off without damaging your newly painted ceiling.

When painting large areas, it is quicker and gives a better finish if you use a roller rather then a brush. To get good coverage and depth in the finish, you may need to use several coats when using a roller, even so you will still use less paint than if you use a paintbrush, it will dry faster, go on much faster and therefore, even though you are applying more than one coat it will still be faster.

Now for the woodwork. Again, mask the walls where they meet the woodwork. Then using a small paintbrush give the woodwork an undercoat. The undercoat will help the top coat to adhere better and will therefore last longer. It also gives a much smoother final finish if the undercoat is lightly sanded. It is normal to use gloss paint on woodwork. This is easier to keep clean and takes the considerable amount of touching that woodwork gets. Trying to paint too thick a coat can produce a poor finish. Far better to apply two thin coats. Always make sure that the paint is dry before applying the next coat

To save you having to repeatedly wash your brushes every time you stop painting, you can wrap your brushes tightly in clingfilm. It prevents air getting to them and will stop them drying out. Even after you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, it is still useful to wrap your brushes. There are always occasions when you need to make good you decorations after disasters, so always keep any left over paint

Always paint window frames when the windows are slightly open. There’s nothing worse that painting a window frame and then finding you can’t open the window!  The same applies to doors. When painting doors, the rule is that you paint those parts of the frame that can be seen when it is open. Or in the case of an inward opening door, when it is closed.

And finally. Don’t rush at this. Enjoy watching your room turn into the space which you have always wanted. Home improvement should be enjoyable. If you find you have hated every minute of it, then next time you want a rooom painted, save up to pay somebody else to do it for you. If you don’t enjoy the process, then you will tend to rush and skimp the work and the end result will not be so good.

How To Create Plain Yet Comfortable Interior Designs

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Tuesday 30 December 2008 9:37 pm

Interior designers who have an inclination to focus on creating simple yet elegant rooms are ordinarily called minimalist designers. A large percentage people believe that this style of interior design is centered merely on modern decoration and design. Contrary to this prevalent notion, minimalist interior design involves a new way of viewing one’s entire world and then bringing that way of thinking over to other particular aspects of our lives, such as our living spaces.

Minimalist interior design is starting to become ever more popular because it centers on utility and including only the necessary components, rather than wasting on unnecessary adornments. This article presents an overview of this new interior design style.

The Notion Behind Minimalist Design

Minimalist interior design concentrates on the way of thinking of “simplicity and elegance.” Nevertheless, it is essential to know that this doesn’t necessarily mean that you are going to produce an empty space. Minimalist design simply means that pieces of furniture and additional objects are selected depending on their use. Whether it be decisions involving the furniture pieces you purchase or ripping down a wall to create bigger floor area, functionality is always the key. Furniture with clean lines, edges, and low pieces are most commonly employed in this design form – the designer tub chairs website shows some good examples.

The Fundamentals of a Minimalist Interior

While various other interior design techniques employ bright, vibrant colors, a minimal method mostly involves colors such as white, cool teals, greens, and corals. This simple palette allows light to bounce off the walls. As a result of the extra light, spaces will seem bigger and cleaner, architectural qualities will be more noticeable, and more attention will be drawn to the interior style of the room. Items that possess sharp corners, hard edges and surfaces, and those built with chrome are common in minimalist interior designs.

Minimalist interior designs employ a great amount of light and minimal adornments. If you decide to use wall art, this should be kept to a maximum of two art pieces per room. All other items, furniture or otherwise, should be considered when using a minimalist design. Electronic equipment, for example, is chosen depending on functionality and its ability to mix in with the overall theme. The look and feel of the equipment is important as well.

One other essential characteristic of minimalist interior design is the significant absence of texture. A few common examples of this are the absence of window treatments, unadorned and linear molding, unornamented furniture pieces with crisp lines, and wooden plank additions. If any kind of texture is found in the room, it is because it has utility.
