Where is the Interior Decorating New Idea Hiding in Your Home?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Thursday 1 October 2009 8:38 am

Some of the most affordable interior decorating ideas can be inspired by something as simple as rugs. Maybe it’s that subtle colour, rich and deeply woven into the fibers of the design that inspires you to go right out and get a new paint color customized for your favourite room of the house. Maybe the big idea is hiding somewhere in the geometric patterns of some contemporary area rugs that will help you to select a modern lamp shade to polish off that one drab corner of your sitting room. Or perhaps, the area rug you found generates so much excitement in your imagination that you decide to just begin from scratch to create the room of your dreams.

Wherever you find your inspiration – be it in a texture or a particular decorating style, area rugs can add either the final, finishing touch – or give you a process of becoming inspired. After all, interior decorating ideas are everywhere. There is no idea too big, or too small. Opportunities to explore your mind’s eye are all around you. Think outside the rug. Is it round, oval, rectangular or square? What pieces do you still need to find to put outside the rug? A bookshelf?

What about the front entrance? Might you need a lengthy area rug to guide your steps from a fabulous foyer into the posh and elegant dining room? What about when your feet hit the floor first thing in the morning? Are they greeted by a hard unwelcoming surface? No! That’s no way to start your day! Consider instead the luxurious feel of a tufted rug in super-soft cotton. Cool in the summer, and cuddly-warm in winter, there’s a reason why this style has endured since it busted out all over (in glamorous gold) in the late 60s and early 70s.

The water closet is an often un-thought space to place a designer area rug. Why should anyone be relegated to buying a department store nylon, rubber-backed matching set of boring and predictable toilet rugs and bath mats? That’s just wrong. With washable area rugs in endless styles and shapes, your family bath can have display the bold panache that you do. And what’s more, it should. Your bathroom should be a place to indulge in relaxing refinements and luxury. Don’t spoil your Queen Sheba milk and vanilla bath by stepping out of the deep tub of wonderfulness and onto a trashy, plastic-y mess of a typecast bath mat.

Area rugs are forever the most affordable solution to covering hardwoods or ceramic tiling. With quality wall-to-wall carpeting costing so much, and an obvious no-no for anyone with indoor allergies, why would you ever commit to only one colour or style? With area rugs, you can switch it up from room to room, artistically, affordably, almost magically!

The customer service experts at Abingdon Rug can help to guide your early ideas into exploring all the 20,000 in-stock discount rugs options open to you. Think outside the rug. There lies your most beautiful inspiration.

Painting a Room For The First Time

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Tuesday 13 January 2009 9:58 pm

Enjoy your home improvement projects, there is certainly no need for tesrs

If You Want To paint your home and you have never tackled anything this big in the past.Read these few helpful suggestions before you start. I’m sure you know many people who will offer suggestions along the way.

Lighter colour schemes will enhance the space in smaller rooms. If it is a large space, then you can put more intense colours on the walls without feeling hemmed in. Similarly, if the room does not get too much light, then, the place can be brightened by using lighter coloures with an eggshell finish. Using white though can make the place look stark and clinical – and it very quickly becomes grubby. Another reason to use eggshell paint is that it does accept the occasional wipe down. an important consideration when you have youn children.

Having searched though all those colour charts, and made your colour choice, the next decision is if you are going to employ a contractor to do the work or do it yourself. If you are going to  do it yourself, the easiest option is to paint the walls (and windowframes and doors). It is also a lot less expensive than wallpaper so it is much less a disaster if you do not like the result, and have to redo it.

The key to a good finish is preparation-preparation-preparation. Before you start, empty your room of as much furniture as you can. Anything that can’t be removed should be covered with plenty of sheets. This applies to carpets too. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned so that you remove the accumulated grease and grime. Next fill any small holes or cracks in wall with filler, if they are larger holes, do them in two or three layers. The filler will usually shrink as it dries. Give it 24hours to fully dry, then rub it down thoroughly with sandpaper  so it is very smooth. Next, smooth all the woodwork with sandpaper. Make sure the woodwork is smooth and dust free, where possible cutting right back to bare wood.

Now start at the top and work downwards. Paint the ceiling first. Wait until it fully dry before starting on anything else. Next place masking tape at the very edge of the ceiling so that you get a very straight line when you paint the walls. Do not leave the masking tape on for to long, it will be difficult to get off without damaging your newly painted ceiling.

When painting large areas, it is quicker and gives a better finish if you use a roller rather then a brush. To get good coverage and depth in the finish, you may need to use several coats when using a roller, even so you will still use less paint than if you use a paintbrush, it will dry faster, go on much faster and therefore, even though you are applying more than one coat it will still be faster.

Now for the woodwork. Again, mask the walls where they meet the woodwork. Then using a small paintbrush give the woodwork an undercoat. The undercoat will help the top coat to adhere better and will therefore last longer. It also gives a much smoother final finish if the undercoat is lightly sanded. It is normal to use gloss paint on woodwork. This is easier to keep clean and takes the considerable amount of touching that woodwork gets. Trying to paint too thick a coat can produce a poor finish. Far better to apply two thin coats. Always make sure that the paint is dry before applying the next coat

To save you having to repeatedly wash your brushes every time you stop painting, you can wrap your brushes tightly in clingfilm. It prevents air getting to them and will stop them drying out. Even after you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, it is still useful to wrap your brushes. There are always occasions when you need to make good you decorations after disasters, so always keep any left over paint

Always paint window frames when the windows are slightly open. There’s nothing worse that painting a window frame and then finding you can’t open the window!  The same applies to doors. When painting doors, the rule is that you paint those parts of the frame that can be seen when it is open. Or in the case of an inward opening door, when it is closed.

And finally. Don’t rush at this. Enjoy watching your room turn into the space which you have always wanted. Home improvement should be enjoyable. If you find you have hated every minute of it, then next time you want a rooom painted, save up to pay somebody else to do it for you. If you don’t enjoy the process, then you will tend to rush and skimp the work and the end result will not be so good.

Backyard Pond – DIY

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 17 November 2008 4:52 pm

I used to think that a family with a backyard pond is a very lucky family or a rich one – or maybe both. Now it is clear to all of us that we can have a backyard pond, we only need to have some room for it. It’s just a matter of learning what steps are involved, working out a small design and doing the work of putting it in. You should know that this is no longer such a daunting mission as it used to be.

If you like to relax and enjoy in the nature, the backyard ponds are perfect for that. They used to be a bigger headache than they are today, because the new technology associated with backyard ponds offer an environment that is more ecologically balanced, look completely natural, are very low maintenance, and make for an excellent habitat for fish, turtles and other wildlife. The algae growth is controlled with ease and most of them are crystal clean and clear.

It is easy to find a proffesional contractor that is willing to construct a water garden for you, or to design a cute little fish pond. Or you could go with the do it yourself route and buy each piece individually. A big plus is a pond kit that will have anything you could need, except for the place where you are going to put it all!) All the hassles aside, backyard ponds are a source of great tranquility in the garden and place to just sit and think.

Big number of backyard ponds is smaller in width and they are mostly placed in such a place that they can be seen from the deck or windows. Owning one is a chance to relax and enjoy in the view by yourself or with your family. I bet your children would love the wildlife a new backyard pond will attract, and it surely will.

My favorite ponds use a flexible liner for unique designs and have a small beach built into the edge. You will get two things with this shallow graduation – birds will be able to dip in the water while the critters will freely get inside and outside. That is just one out of many ways to make something special at your backyard and create a wonderful atmosphere.

Make Your Windows Beautiful

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 5 November 2008 9:39 pm

Windows are usually forgotten when it comes do interior decorating, but they trully are an essential decorating element. It’s easy enough to comprehend why – after all, besides from looking outside or giving in the light, what other function do windows have, contrasted to how a big wall or fireplace might look? You can’t escape the fact that your windows are an important part of your interior decor. Just think about a few decorating tips for windows bellow if you are serious about the decorating theme.

It is not important what kind of theme you are working, if you pick the window treatments that have coordinated colors and styles, your design will be superb. For example, adding wood blinds in place of drapes or curtains to a lodge, cabin or other wood type style decorating theme will help continue the theme throughout the room. Using shades is a great solution if you want a special atmosphere in your room, with a lot of privacy and a little light.

Do not think that window decorating is all about curtains and drapes, you can sand your windows a bit and give them a new layer of paint, or completely other color. The easiest way to make your windows look fabulous is to use a coat of paint. If you want to create a practical and stylish look for your home windows, you can install those little clasps or safey locks on your frame.

Windows in your home can be decorated with side tabs and even scallops, which is great to go with a lot of other design themes. Using these, you can tie the sheer drapes or kitchen curtains back opening up the window to let light in. Using a scalloped valance, you can add style to any window.

Mixing materials is another approach that can look fresh. It’s great if you are willing to mix few different materials, changing the styles and patterns as you go. To soften up your window decorations a bit, you can use the wood blinds that are easily put together with some fabric windows treatments like drapes.

Flooring Options for Everyone

Posted by HomeDesigner | Flooring | Tuesday 23 September 2008 1:54 pm

There are a plethora of types of floors that are available to homeowners today.  Carpet, hardwood floors, laminate flooring, cork, bamboo, and ceramic tile are some of the most common that are readily available to consumers today.  Many households have many types of flooring as well – leaving even more questions about what type for what room.  Just hardwood floors alone come in many varieties and types:  distressed & hand scraped, engineered wood floors, and glueless floating wood – those options alone can leave one pondering what to pick.

Let’s start with carpet.  Carpet normally brings luxury, fashion and comfort to mind. Carpet is often the preferred flooring for bedrooms and living rooms.  It’s quiet, insulates well from cold and the color options are numerous. There are many materials and styles available; so many that you may need a little help choosing. Carpet can be selected based on fiber, density and texture.  So like soft, some like a little firmer.  Regardless of your preferences many options are out there.

Although it may initially be confusing when it comes to choosing hardwood floors, they can be very attractive and can really add some appeal, and worth to your home.  First, you should decide what type of finished look you want to achieve. If you’re going after a modern or contemporary look, you may want to lean towards a type of wood hat has a cleaner look with less texture and grain such as Maple, Birch, or Cherry. If you prefer a more casual or rustic look, then you may want to consider an Oak or Pine.

Laminate flooring was first introduced into the US in 1982. Since then the sector has experienced growth of up to 20%, making laminate the fastest growing floor type in the country. The appeal lies not only in its aesthetic value of its representation of real hardwood, but also due to its incredible durability and ease of maintenance.

Ceramic floor tile is an elegant and stylish flooring material whose true origins remain unknown, even today. Ceramic floor tile can come in virtually any color and is tough and durable that it can actually last as long as your home can stand. Ceramic floor tile is actually the oldest form of flooring material known to man, aside from primitive use of dirt and bear skins. Speaking of dirt, creating ceramic floor tile is simply a combination of different clays that have been mixed with water, designed, shaped and then fired in special kilns. You could basically consider ceramic floor tile nothing more than flame broiled mud. Nevertheless it’s a sturdy, stylish and dependable choice for flooring.

Regardless of the room you’re redecorating or the flooring you’re looking into buying, there are many worthy and fun options to pick from.
