Get the Minimalist Look with Modern Interior Home Design

Interior Design is a very personal choice and something which is open to quite a bit of interpretation.  What is rustic to one person could be quite shabby chic to another!  But when it comes to modern interior home design most people immediately think of clean lines, uncluttered rooms with minimalist furniture and accessories.  Modern interior home design can also be referred to as Contemporary design.

Colours and Materials to use to great that clean look

When most people think of modern interior home design they think of pale rooms covered in magnolia paint!  Whilst it is true that magnolia is a popular colour and certainly well used in the interior home design world, do not be surprised to find very bold colours such as red, orange and lime green in most home colour schemes.  Modern interior home design also allows for the use of more muted colours such as dark brown, gray, black or even purple.

One thing you will not find in modern interior home design is chintz or very ‘busy’ patterns.  Old fashioned ornaments (You know like the one your Gran used to have!) are also not part of today’s interior home design scheme.

Everything needs to be clean lines, uncluttered, simple design statements.  Patterns are still popular but they are subtle and generally quite large.  They also tend to be in muted colours.

Texture is also very big in modern interior home design and you will find these textures in rugs, curtains and even the materials for linens. Contrasts of sleek and smooth are common in the modern or contemporary look so you might have satiny sheets paired with an organic, solid color knitted or quilted blanket.

Glass, geometric shapes and interesting contours are often found in modern interior home design as opposed to warm woods and boxy design. Glass tables, frosted glass in lamps or even glass in cabinets sets off a particular modern interior home design look. The use of metal, such as metal framing for a glass table or shiny metal chair legs or even chrome cabinet handles are other examples of the style.

The use of glass and shiny metals does reflect more light and creates an illusion of space.  This can be particularly useful in a small space or room.

The Birth of the Home Theater and Living Area

The explosion of flat screen LCD or plasma televisions has really done wonders in terms of modern interior home design for the home theater. Because the modern look is sleek and contemporary with clean lines and no fussy details, the flat screens are perfect. To perpetuate the modern look, you should either mount the television onto the wall (make sure it is in a wall stud) or place it on an anchored pedestal such as an entertainment center made from wood, steel or glass.

You won’t see a cushy recliner or lumpy sofa in a living room with a modern interior home design. Instead you will see contoured furniture in different shapes, angles and materials like metal, chrome, glass or sleek wood.  Furniture in bold colours also works really well, so go ahead and order that bright red sofa!!
