Air Condtioning: Weighing Up Your Options

Posted by Interior Design | Decorating | Thursday 29 July 2010 11:35 am

Its easy to forget how hot summer can be when you’re wrapped under layers of clothing in the winter months. But when that first wave of heat descends, thoughts start to turn to ways to keep cool. One obvious choice is installing AC but it doesn’t come cheap. So why do it?

Ready? Then let’s start. First the Pro, in favor of/in support of:

The number one point in support for installing air conditioning will be making life more comfortable in the summer months. Not feeling overwhelmed by heat is important especially if you work from home.

A second point in favor could well be having a calmer house as people tend to get short tempered when they are hot and if you don’t have another way of cooling down like a swimming pool then things can get very trying very quickly.

The third supporting point is going to be getting more done as its easy to feel lethargic in the heat. You may start off the day with good intentions but as the temperature heats up your plans get scrapped and all you want to do is lie still and keep cool.

A fourth big benefit is not having to worry about sleeping at night. And last (although not necessarily least) we’ve got the fifth point in support is avoiding heat rash if you’re prone to skin irritations.

For balance then let’s hear from the other side, those opposed, the ‘Con’ side:

Firstly, the point against is going to be cost, both installation and running expenses.

And the second negative point is the effect on the environment through increased energy use

The third point in contra is going to be difficulty adjusting to the heat when you step out from your air conditioned cocoon.

4th point in contra will be the moisture that can accumulate in your furnishings and wardrobe. A dehumidifier can help reduce the moisture build up but of course that is an extra expense to consider.

5th and ultimately, last point in contra is the noise, finding a quiet AC is important if you’re going to run it extensively. And that’s where doing your research is very important. You’ll want to hear the air condtioning running first before you make your decision to purchase it.

So there we have all the arguments from each side.

And so, who won? What might we conclude? Is installing air conditioning more good than bad? or maybe more bad than good?

The response appears to be ‘Yes’ to both questions! installing air conditioning is a blend of of good and bad… It is left up to the reader to make the decision which side, the good or the bad, outweighs the other…

Make Interior Design Easy with CAD Software

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Wednesday 28 January 2009 11:45 am

Most experts in the field of property sales and interior design agree that a contributing factor to a homes positive resale growth is maintaining its cohesiveness, while executing thoughtful upgrades to bathrooms, kitchens, and bedrooms. That is why it is important when initiating a remodelling project to create a plan that keeps intact a consistent, flowing design. A renovation or remodel aided by the technology of 3D CAD software can do wonders for a homes appearance and usefulness, while a poorly done project will quickly turn a home into a hopeless money pit.

For the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer, or interior designer looking for an easier way to create a visual presentation and plan for a renovation or remodel, CAD software is a compelling way to go. Bathroom, bedroom and kitchen design software allows the user to quickly and easily create an accurate, graphic representation of how a room might look in a home. CAD software has been further developed for a much more user-friendly experience in recent years. The result is that a user need not be a CAD systems specialist or computer expert to utilise the technology. Essentially, CAD software takes much of the guess-work out of remodelling any room in the home.

Going into a home remodel/redesign without a clear visual concept of what the finished project is a very slippery slope to travel upon. When making even minor changes to the kitchen or bathroom you risk ruining the cohesive flow of a homes design. This type of disruption can drastically reduce the value of a home, because of both the visual impact, as well as the practical problems that might arise. in terms of style, design, and flow, by being able to custom create a 3D environment in advance of any work actually being initiated; one is able to understand the effect of any changes that are to be made. The advantage of the perspective gained by using CAD software ensures the ability to accomplish a remodel that dramatically improve the bedroom, kitchen and bathroom design, and maintains cohesiveness throughout the home.

Imagine the joy of being able to enter a virtual 3D environment where you can add, subtract or rearrange anything. You can change colours and fixtures as well as view everything around a room literally from a different angle. This is precisely what’s possible with 3D CAD software. Using computer aided design software is like turning on a light where you were previously stumbling around in dark.

Whether or not you have any experience with home decor or home decorating of any kind, you can make changes to your home’s look if you are properly armed with a little information and some helpful tips. The first step is to come up with a plan for your decor. By doing this you’ll find it easier to figure out what exactly the changes are that you want to make to implement, as well as exactly what parts of your room you want to revamp before proceeding with your interior decorating ideas. Careful planning will make the end result of your home decor experience much more satisfying.

Your budget is the next thing to think about. Setting aside a certain amount of money to carry out your home decorating and sticking to your budget is very important, and this will be easy to do as long as you have made the proper plan in the first place. You can then comparison shop for the items that you will need based on the size of your budget.

You will most likely, for example, not be able to purchase both shelving and furniture at the same place so you will have to visit several outlets to find out what you can buy from where, and at the best possible prices.

Home Decor Software – Using Modern Technology To Your Advantage

When you plan your new decor, try using interior design software. Software is a great tool that can help you immensely with regard to your plans for your floor decor. However, this can sometimes work out quite costly, so make sure that you check whether or not your budget can accommodate such a luxury. After all, you do not want to be spending the bulk of your money allocated to decorating materials on software showing you how to do the job and have little funds left to buy what you actually need.

Making Use Of Professional Assistance

Quite often home owners take the easier option of allowing the professional to carry out the work needed to redecorate their homes. For the home owner who has never done any redecorating before, this is a good choice; a professional can be very helpful with suggestions and implementing the homeowner’s ideas.

Some people will indeed naturally possess the skills that they need to redecorate their home. Others will not even know how to begin. If you are of the latter type and are totally clueless regard to home decorating, it’s probably best to seek a professional to help you out. You will probably have to pay the professional decorators by the hour, but this is usually a one-time expense over the course of a day or two. Once you get started, you’ll have the necessary means to give your home a fresh new look.

Updating Rooms With A Modern Interior Design Idea

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Tuesday 27 January 2009 10:31 am

Looking around your home, you might decide you need a change. Sometimes change isn’t easy if you are not good at designs, there are however plenty of places to find help. A contemporary design idea will work well for a home that hasn’t been touched in a good many years. Contemporary accessories can be found everywhere, making a modern interior design simple. Contemporary accessories are also easy to duplicate if you are on a limited budget.

Bold And Clean

The look for a modern interior design idea has clean lines and bold colors. Generally there is not much detail in the woodworking of furniture. Metal and acrylic furniture are acceptable in contemporary interior design, as is the new blow-up furniture. Monochromatic and bright colors are both found in contemporary interior design ideas. Solid color leather furniture is a good place to start with a contemporary interior design idea. Red, black or tan leather is a great look for this style of design. Coordinating these colors with white or black accessories really looks great. Box shaped end tables and a large rectangle coffee table also works with contemporary design. These tables can be either monochromatic or the opposite color of the furniture. To further accent the room you should use large, contemporary artwork and tall floor lamps. Similar table lamps can also accent the furniture. A large textured rug should also be placed in the room. There are endless possibilities for a contemporary interior design idea for a room. Any free interior design idea will work in this modern style, as well. If you have an accessory that you love and don’t feel it has a modern feel, remember, it’s your abode and you are the ruler of your castle and if you cherish it, then it works.

Central Focus

Some people have a beautiful custom area rug that they use for their contemporary interior design idea. Starting with the rug is a great idea. A room can be built around a beautiful rug. They are sculpted and carved with great care. You can take a picture or an idea to one of these rug craftsman and they will duplicate the design into the rug. These rug craftsmen are exceptional artists. A person can always begin with one of these rugs and pull ideas into their rooms for a modern feel.

Attic Renovating Secrets

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Thursday 22 January 2009 2:16 pm

residential interior design

What’s increasingly tougher? Building a house or renovating with interior design ideas? If this is planned properly, you will be able to succeed in both. Aside from that, here are a few other things you will need to make sure everything goes smoothly.

To start, realize what needs to occur to the attic? You should have an outline what this will be changed into. Do you want to make this into a extra bedroom, a playroom for the kids, a gym or an office? When you have figured that out, it will already be easy to get the right tools and equipment.

A renovation should not cost you an arm and a leg. To prevent this happening, another thing you have to think about is your budget. Naturally, homeowners who are able to do it themselves will be able to save hundreds of dollars. If you are stumped by a small problem, try looking for information about this online or on television since there are shows that can teach you a thing or two so you can carry on with your work.

But if you are inexperienced and you want this done right, it is best to hire a professional. Just remember that hiring someone who does this for living will cost money.

You can try and save some dollars by canvassing around and calling up different contractors. Is the most inexpensive contractor the answer? If they are in the beginning stages then you’ll be uncertain if they can perform a decent job.

So, you don’t make the mistake of hiring the wrong contractor. Your decision on who to get should not be based on how much they are quoting but rather on their experience in this line of work.

You should call up their previous customers and ask questions. If you are satisfied with your background check, then you can consider them as someone you can hire for the renovation.

But going back to the issue of your budget, if the contractor is asking a certain price and it has exceeded your budget, the best thing for you to do will be to find ways to save money. You can do so by installing cheaper but still durable appliances, recycle some of furniture in the room by repainting it so they look once again or have the work done in phases. This may take longer than what you anticipated but at least you are working within your limits.

You will be able to complete the renovation of the attic if you stick to the budget and your starting plan. It’s unfortunate that those who do not plan ahead of time, hire the wrong contractor, spend wisely, end up with a project that’s incomplete.

Surely, you don’t want to happen to your attic or any room in your house. So, before you do anything, think about what you want to turn the attic into and get ideas from residential interior design magazines or online. Some people follow exactly what they see while others make some slight modifications.

When it comes down to attic renovations, there is no right or wrong answers. The important thing is that it you are happy as it shows your personality so forget what other people say and just go for it.

So What Can Interior Design Professionals Really Deliver?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Saturday 17 January 2009 5:09 pm

OK, so what is interior design and how can it help you?  Interior design is a very misunderstood profession.  Probably wherever you live you have TV programs of interior designers moving things around in rooms and changing décor.  But the question you might then have is: is interior design merely the art or the act of decorating a room? How is interior design different from mere home rennovation?

Most of the time decoration of a house or a room is what you might consider as purely rennovational and morely at surface-level. This might involve painting, laying new carpets or in the greatest detail it might get into plastering. Interior designers can tell you that they go well beyond this.

The interior designer may be responsible for changing window panes and carpets, redoing floorings, painting even wiring and plumbing.  He may have to purchase certain fittings, perhaps within the kitchen or the bathroom. See a detailed explanation of this on the interior design company london site. He or she may have to purchase new furniture and accessories for example cushions plus various other types of ornamental furniture in keeping with the client’s desired look. Have a look at the chaise lounge website for examples of furniture models used to produce a designer finish.

An interior designer will typically be working with the clients vision or concept and the client will have completely different ideas to the interior designer himself.  The interior designer will take the principle idea or a specification from the client and his task is to turn it into a completely finished product which might be a completely new feel within a room or even several rooms within the home or office.

So finally, the interior designer in his role has to not just paint walls but he also has to create an entire finished item that is in harmony with the client’s idea about what he wants, either in one room or througout the house.

Painting a Room For The First Time

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Tuesday 13 January 2009 9:58 pm

Enjoy your home improvement projects, there is certainly no need for tesrs

If You Want To paint your home and you have never tackled anything this big in the past.Read these few helpful suggestions before you start. I’m sure you know many people who will offer suggestions along the way.

Lighter colour schemes will enhance the space in smaller rooms. If it is a large space, then you can put more intense colours on the walls without feeling hemmed in. Similarly, if the room does not get too much light, then, the place can be brightened by using lighter coloures with an eggshell finish. Using white though can make the place look stark and clinical – and it very quickly becomes grubby. Another reason to use eggshell paint is that it does accept the occasional wipe down. an important consideration when you have youn children.

Having searched though all those colour charts, and made your colour choice, the next decision is if you are going to employ a contractor to do the work or do it yourself. If you are going to  do it yourself, the easiest option is to paint the walls (and windowframes and doors). It is also a lot less expensive than wallpaper so it is much less a disaster if you do not like the result, and have to redo it.

The key to a good finish is preparation-preparation-preparation. Before you start, empty your room of as much furniture as you can. Anything that can’t be removed should be covered with plenty of sheets. This applies to carpets too. All surfaces should be thoroughly cleaned so that you remove the accumulated grease and grime. Next fill any small holes or cracks in wall with filler, if they are larger holes, do them in two or three layers. The filler will usually shrink as it dries. Give it 24hours to fully dry, then rub it down thoroughly with sandpaper  so it is very smooth. Next, smooth all the woodwork with sandpaper. Make sure the woodwork is smooth and dust free, where possible cutting right back to bare wood.

Now start at the top and work downwards. Paint the ceiling first. Wait until it fully dry before starting on anything else. Next place masking tape at the very edge of the ceiling so that you get a very straight line when you paint the walls. Do not leave the masking tape on for to long, it will be difficult to get off without damaging your newly painted ceiling.

When painting large areas, it is quicker and gives a better finish if you use a roller rather then a brush. To get good coverage and depth in the finish, you may need to use several coats when using a roller, even so you will still use less paint than if you use a paintbrush, it will dry faster, go on much faster and therefore, even though you are applying more than one coat it will still be faster.

Now for the woodwork. Again, mask the walls where they meet the woodwork. Then using a small paintbrush give the woodwork an undercoat. The undercoat will help the top coat to adhere better and will therefore last longer. It also gives a much smoother final finish if the undercoat is lightly sanded. It is normal to use gloss paint on woodwork. This is easier to keep clean and takes the considerable amount of touching that woodwork gets. Trying to paint too thick a coat can produce a poor finish. Far better to apply two thin coats. Always make sure that the paint is dry before applying the next coat

To save you having to repeatedly wash your brushes every time you stop painting, you can wrap your brushes tightly in clingfilm. It prevents air getting to them and will stop them drying out. Even after you have thoroughly cleaned your brushes, it is still useful to wrap your brushes. There are always occasions when you need to make good you decorations after disasters, so always keep any left over paint

Always paint window frames when the windows are slightly open. There’s nothing worse that painting a window frame and then finding you can’t open the window!  The same applies to doors. When painting doors, the rule is that you paint those parts of the frame that can be seen when it is open. Or in the case of an inward opening door, when it is closed.

And finally. Don’t rush at this. Enjoy watching your room turn into the space which you have always wanted. Home improvement should be enjoyable. If you find you have hated every minute of it, then next time you want a rooom painted, save up to pay somebody else to do it for you. If you don’t enjoy the process, then you will tend to rush and skimp the work and the end result will not be so good.

Styles of Roller Blinds – Which Options to Choose?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Monday 6 October 2008 7:10 pm

Roller blinds are a great way to modernise your windows while accenting the interior style of your home. There are a wide range of different styles of roller blinds available, and the different fabric and colour choices offer endless possibilities when it comes to decorating. Made from stiffened fabric, roller blinds are easy to maintain and care for, and can be operated with a cord or remote. Exploring all of the different styles of roller blinds can help you to determine which style would work best for you.

Light Control and Privacy

There are different styles of roller blinds, and they all produce various types of light and privacy control. If you are looking for the best in privacy and want to block out all light, then black out roller blinds are best. These thicker fabric blinds are made with 100% light blocking material that don’t allow any light in when drawn down, they also do not allow anyone to see into your home.

For the best of both worlds, consider a new day/night style of roller blind. These newer style blinds are a two in one system that provides a light filtering blind for the daytime, and a privacy black out shade for night. This allows a warm filtering of light to enter your home during the day, and lets you relax in absolute privacy at night-time.

Many styles of roller blinds also offer a balance between the two. Plain roller blinds are made from various types of material and allow a filtering of light all day long. Lace and sunscreen roller blinds allow you to still keep your view outside while filtering light. These types of blinds do not provide much in the way of privacy however, so they are best suited to rooms in your home where privacy is less important such as the kitchen or dining room.

Interior Design and Decoration

Exploring what kind of look or style you want to add to the rooms of your home can also help you decide which style of roller blinds you want. There are various types of fabrics that roller blinds can be made from, and you can even match the material and colour of a roller blind to the furnishings of your home.

Envelope, castellated, and eyelet roller blinds all provide a variation on regular rollers, and create a unique look with their varied shapes and accents. Envelope roller blinds have an envelope shape at the very bottom of the blind for a sophisticated valance look when the roller blind is pulled up. Castellated roller blinds have scallops at the bottom of the blind, which are reminiscent of the top of a castle. Eyelet blinds offer small metalwork circles at the bottom of the blind for added detail and a different look.

Different textures are another way that you can enhance the look of your home with the addition of roller blinds. Textured weave roller blinds give your blinds a 3D appearance that form a deep contrast to flat coloured walls. Sheer roller blinds offer a venetian look and texture to your home. These blinds have a strip of sheer fabric in between two strips of solid fabric, and can be adjusted with a pull cord to open and close the slats just like a venetian blind. When you determine what kind of look you want to create with roller blinds, you are one step closer to choosing the style that is best for you.

Colour and Care

Roller blinds are notoriously durable, but even durable blinds need care and attention every once in a while. Before you choose the type of fabric and style for your roller blinds, you may want to think about how you can clean it, how much care it will require, and how often. Some fabrics are beautiful, but difficult to clean and maintain. If you don’t have much time to spend on roller blind care, you will want to choose a fabric that can be easily wiped down and maintained.

Colour is very important when choosing roller blinds that are perfect for your home. Different colours lend themselves better to one style of roller blind than another. For example, lighter colour s can be used with black out roller blinds, but you may want to consider a darker colour for a more dramatic effect. Match the colour to your interior, or choose a colour that will make a statement while contrasting your current interior colour scheme.

With the many different types of roller blinds and the variety of features that each provides, choosing the right style for you can often be a daunting task. If you take the time to explore all of the various styles and what they can do for your home, the decision becomes easier to make. Choosing the right style of roller blinds can give your home a modern and elegant look, while keeping out light and providing a level of privacy that you are comfortable with.

Timber Blinds: The Natural Choice

Posted by HomeDesigner | Decorating | Monday 6 October 2008 7:02 pm

Timber blinds provide the perfect opportunity to bring a natural feel to any room in your new home. A modern way to “go green,” choosing timber blinds as your window covering can transform any room with a feeling of warmth and sophistication. There are many benefits that can be gained through the use of timber blinds, and they are available in a wide variety of colours, woods, and styles to meet the needs of any homeowner. A look at the benefits and style that timber blinds offer, makes it clear why they are the natural option for any home.

Materials and Colours

Obviously timber blinds are made of wood, however you do still have a choice in the materials that make up your timber blinds. Available in many different types of wood, timber blinds still allow consumers to have some say in choosing what is best for their home. The most common type of wood used to make timber blinds is cedar, however basswood, bamboo, and others can be found as well. Each type of wood has its benefits and creates a unique look, so determining which kinds of wood would work best for you is important when choosing timber blinds.

Just like the various types of wood, timber blinds come in a variety of shades as well. From light coloured wood, to dark cherry stained and natural wood, timber blinds can be purchased at a retail location or custom made to match your home. Timber blinds make excellent window treatments by themselves, so choosing a colour that will accent your home is essential. If you plan to place curtains or draperies over your timber blinds, it is best to find a shade of timber blind that will work best for you.

Benefits and Styles

Most timber blinds come in a venetian style, although they are occasionally seen in other styles of blinds such as roller and vertical. Venetian timber blinds provide for full coverage of your window however, and also offer an ease of use not seen in many other styles of timber blinds.
There are many natural benefits of using timber blinds. Since wood is a natural insulator, timber blinds will keep your home cool in the summer and warmer in the winter. Timber blinds also help to block outside disturbances and noise as wood helps to insulate the windows of your home. The warmth and screened light that timber blinds provides is hard to match with any other type of blind, and radiates an air of comfort and elegance.
Unlike vinyl and metal blinds that can bend and become damaged easily timber blinds are very durable and can last you many years if cared for properly. Fabric blinds can often become faded and stained after years of use, but timber blinds that are made with a protective coating keep their shine and colour while remaining fully functional.

Care and Maintenance

Timber blinds do not require an enormous amount of care and maintenance, but they do require some attention to keep them looking their best, and to ensure that they remain functional. If timber blinds are not open and closed often and remain in the same position for an extended period of time, it is important to open and close them every so often to keep them from becoming stiff or stuck.

Every so often timber blinds will need to be dusted. Since they are made of wood, they will collect dust, but a simple swipe with a duster or rag will clear the debris away quickly. Depending on what type of wood or stain was used to make your timber blinds, special care of the wood may periodically be required, such as oiling or cleaning. Checking with the manufacturer of your timber blinds will help you to learn how to properly care for them.

Timber blinds are the natural option when it comes to window coverings, and provide your home with natural benefits and warmth as well. From keeping out noise, to insulating your home and saving you money, the benefits and beauty that timber blinds provide is almost unmatched. Available in a wide variety of woods and colours, timber blinds can be made to match the interior of any home for a natural and elegant look.
