The Romance of Art Deco Interior Design

Most people think of the era of Art Deco Interior Design as being an era of extreme elegance and bold statements.  Although this is a design era of the past, in its day the designs were considered to be before their time.  The bold statements, clean lines and even the glamour were seen as “ultra modern” and were reflected in all areas of life such as, fashion, films, residential and industrial designs.

While a lot of different design movements have some sort of roots that lead back to important political or even philosophical intentions, art deco interior design is not one of those movements. In fact, art deco design came about simply for decorative purposes with it’s popularity peaking in the roaring twenties.

While this is something that most people may already know, one fact that is not as widely known is where the term Art Deco comes from. It has been found that the term actually was derived from the year 1925 and its events, although the term was not actually coined until late in the 1960′s. And it was actually a book, by the man who coined the term that made it popular in 1968.

Luxury Art Deco – The End of an Era

Art Deco design came to an abrupt halt around the time of World War II.  Up until this point its appeal had always been that it was an image of luxury and individuality.  However, around this time the mass production of art deco items became more popular.  Buildings, furniture, clothes etc all became more available and therefore the image of art deco changed.  Its appeal changed, it was no longer considered luxurious.  Everyone could now have a piece of art deco design, be it their home, a piece of furniture or an item of clothing.

In today’s interior design world their is a great deal of appreciation for true art deco design.  Many people love the era and the designs of the buildings and furniture available then.  Many people and organizations are working to restore buildings from the art deco age as these buildings are a major part of our history.  Many of these buildings are now hotels, private homes and businesses.  Many examples of true art deco furniture and art are also being restored to their former glory.

While there have been many little rebirths of art deco design and interest, there has never been a period so strong in the love of art deco as that of the 1920′s and 1930′s.  It is important to many people that the era of art deco interior design lives on in our lives now and in the future.
