Solar or Wind Powered Electricity?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 25 May 2009 12:40 pm

Wind Powered Electricity

A good alternative energy solution seems to be wind powered electricity or should we focus completely on solar powered electricity? With more than one crises in the world (environmental, financial and a fuel shortage) people are looking for energy alternatives. And although a lot of the people with actual power are not yet convinced that this is the best time to go green, the common people understand it and they are searching for energy alternatives. But what alternatives are the best, solar or wind powered electricity?

Reasons to start looking for alternatives:

  • Lower or eliminate power bills
  • Be self sufficient
  • Get of the grid
  • Better world for our children
  • Better for our health in general
  • Fossil fuels like oil should be used as material to create for example plastic and not for energy usage.

Wind powered electricity is not a new alternative

Wind power is used for many centuries, in earlier days windmills where usually used to grind grain but also as lumber mill and for other purposes. Modern windmills are primarily used for wind generated electricity, even in Holland a country that is known for its windmills time has progressed.

There are two types of wind powered electricity, the first is produced by the power companies in large windmill parks and the second are residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7. Energy produced by the spinner blades is enormous and that is why wind is in both cases a perfect alternative. The wind powered electricity process requires less resources than solar power panels and they are simple to install.

Wind powered electricity is very good for the planet

This renewable source of power is a perfect alternative for fossil fuels and it will probably be one of the biggest alternatives we will use. The fact that wind powered electricity is hard to store is the only problem. You just can’t put it in a jar and open it when you need it. But batteries are improving rapidly the last few years and will become better and cheaper quickly. This means that it will be easier to store this kind of free energy.

Wind powered electricity can be used all over the planet

Another great advantage of wind powered electricity over solar electricity is that it is available in all corners of the world. And each country will be able to supply energy to there own people. This type of wind powered electricity on a large scale also creates jobs in countries because they need to be produced, placed and maintained.

Get off the grid

If you are able to use your own residential wind turbine you have a great advantage, it will reduce or eliminate your power bills and you actually do something to create a better healthier world. It depends on on your location what kind of system you choose because wind powered electricity is at least as good as solar power. There are excellent residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7 and that are not difficult to install and that are a perfect solution for many homes that are not urban located.

The best thing you can do if you are interested in a residential wind turbine system is to inform yourself about your options. At her website UnlikeNormalEnergy.com, Cathy Patterson, will provide you with all kinds of helpful information about alternative sources of energy like for example the Skystream 3.7 wind turbine or Solar Security Light .

Tips in Hiring a Pest Control Company

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 25 May 2009 12:38 pm

Though there are some minor pest problems we can handle on our own, large problems or pest problems in large areas will probably call for the aid of a pest control firm. But who should you contact? Are they all basically alike? Probably many in your area are advertised. Here are some tips in wisely choosing a pest control company.

First, the firm must be nearby. If you contract with a distant company, you will probably be charged extra for transportation costs every time they come. This could add up to a significant additional cost. For example, if you’re looking for Wisconsin pest control, it doesn’t help to know a good company in Texas.

The more important question is, are they honest? A family moved from the north to the south in the US and quickly learned that termites were a serious problem to wood structures. In fact a house could not be sold without a termite inspection. This pattern quickly emerged: when you call for an inspection, they will find evidence of termites. If you sign a one year contract with them and ask them to return within that time period, they will not find evidence of termites. Were they really honest? Who knows!

Honesty not only deals with what they say about your problem but also with what they say about their treatment. Do they have a guarantee? If so, do they back it up, no matter how many times they have to return to your place? You will learn this through their reputation with other people who have sought their help.

The third thing to consider is how prompt they are. On the one hand, your pest problem can’t wait weeks to be solved. How quickly can they arrive and treat your pest problem? On the other hand, a busy firm is a popular firm. If many are relying on this company for their pest control, they must have a good number of satisfied customers.

Fourth, how experienced is the pest control company with your particular problem? Some firms might say they can handle anything but in reality they have no experience with your particular problem, like how to get rid of bats. Be sure they can handle your problem effectively.

Fifth, some are concerned about the many chemicals that could poison other animals, a source of water, or damage the environment. Are they are aware of any residual problems from the chemicals they use?  How do they deal with this?

The pest control business is expensive. It requires vehicles, equipment, and training and these costs must be passed on to the consumer. Therefore, it will be an investment to rid your property of annoying or dangerous pests. But if you want to get rid of mice or any other pest, follow these points and you will likely find a company who will serve you well.

How to Organize Clutter

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 18 May 2009 5:46 pm

Many people want to have an organized home without the clutter but they do not know how to go about getting rid of the clutter so it is frustrating. When a house gets to the point that it has too much clutter you end up spending so much time trying to de-clutter that you don’t get to the dusting or vacuuming. One is usually too tired to keep cleaning after all the time is spent on clearing away the clutter. But the good news is there are things you can do to control and organize clutter BEFORE it becomes overwhelming.

What clutter people’s homes the most is the piles of papers they have all over. Newspapers, mail, work papers, and the children’s school work easily become piles of paper around the house. There are a few ways you can organize yourself in order to avoid these stacks of paper cluttering up your home.

The mail and what to do with it is our first subject. Everyday when you get the mail go through it right away and the first thing you do is throw away the junk mail. The junk mail gets thrown in the trash before going back into the house for some people. Then the bills that need to be paid should be put in a “to do” folder. Some people create a space near the phone or computer desk to put a basket for all their to do papers or they have a drawer in the desk to put them in file folders. Then with the other papers you feel are important to keep you need to file them away right then and there and not wait for later. Clutter will remain if you wait until later because later gets here.

If you need to bring home work papers then you can use to same principle as mail with those papers. You can put your important papers in a file folder and then put your papers you need to do something about in another spot or folder.

To easily dispose of your newspaper you can place a bin next to your trash can under your kitchen counter. Once the newspaper is read then put it into the proper container. Then it is easy to take out both bins at the same time.

It is so easy for proud parents to get caught up in keeping every piece of paper their child brings homes from school. Those school papers soon turn into large piles that turn into clutter. Trying to keep the clutter down can be a challenge when you want to keep the school papers as keepsakes for your child’s memory book.A solution to this problem is to buy a box or container and keep it in a cabinet or closet close by. Then you can go through the kids schoolwork and determine which papers you really want to keep and put it in the bin. Instead of storing the large artwork and science projects you could take pictures of them and then throw them away. You can occasionally remove the papers from the closet and put them in a permanent place such as a larger box that can be kept in an attic or basement or even under a bed. This way you can organize clutter and still keep those precious memories that you and your child can look through and remember one day.

You have to get in the habit of asking yourself if the item that is cluttering your house is something you will use over and over again as you try to de-clutter and organize?” You MUST be honest with yourself though.Throw away anything you haven’t needed to use in a year because chances are you probably won’t ever need to use it again! You might consider giving your unused or unneeded articles to charity or you could have a garage sale to get fid of them. If you are not sure whether or not you should keep an item or not, store it for six months, and if you don’t use it in that time frame then get rid of it.

For your seasonal items purchase some large storage containers that can be stacked on top of each other and put them in an attic, basement, or garage. Always mark you storage containers well so that you will know what is in each one. No one needs the aggravation of having to search though every box to find the decorations they want. You will always know what is in the containers if you mark them well and you will also be able to find your items easily when you are looking for them. Remember if you see that their are stained, broken, or damaged items put them in the trash.

It may take some time to organize clutter around your house at first, but once you have set up a system and routine it will so easy to keep up the things that come into your home. Now enjoy your clutter-free environment!

Make Yourself Comfortable With The Sofa Bed

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 13 May 2009 10:19 am

futons

If you have ever been stuck on an old sofa bed for the night, then you know how torturous it can be. Sofa beds, in the past, were sheer instruments of torture that caused a very uncomfortable night of sleep. It was not something that anyone looked forward to enduring. The mattresses on these beds were very thin and the rails would poke through, directly into your back. Comfortable beds they were definitely not.

Well friend, times have changed and today the sofa bed is not only quite comfortable it is also quite fashionable. They are much better for your comfort than futons and the bedding is an accent rather than the necessary padding that was required in the past. You can find these new sofa beds in either twin or double bed sizes. The difference is all in the size of the sofa or chair.

One of the greatest inventions of late is the oversize chair. Many oversized chairs now fold out into twin beds. The outside of the bed is very comfortable and can accommodate up to two people, yet the oversize chair is actually meant to be a single seating situation. Instead of a full sized sofa, many people are opting to purchase two of these chairs to accommodate their overnight guests. What is unique is that when guests come over they are treated to a great night’s sleep on twin beds that have thick mattresses and are actually very comfortable.

The added bonus of an oversize sleeper chair is that it does not take up as much room as a full sized sleeper sofa. It is also easier to move than the traditional full size sleeper sofa and can stand up to more weight in the center of the mattress. It has much more support and with its beautifully plush exterior it is a bonus to have in any living room, guest room or den.

No longer will your sofa bed be an instrument of torture. With a new guest bed you can place it anywhere and not have to worry about having an extra bedroom for your guests. This is a great advantage for those who do not have an extra room to turn into a guest bedroom. In the housing market today that is a great plus with so many people having to downsize their living situations. Try out the new oversized chairs and the new sofa beds. You will be surprised and delighted to buy one for your home.

Garden Furniture - What Should I Look For?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 13 May 2009 10:18 am

You should try to have somewhere you can enjoy your garden and sit and take the time to appreciate what you have achieved. Some garden furniture is an almost essential part of the plan for a garden. Garden furniture is not simply about having somewhere to sit. It is useful for creating a focal point in a specific area of your garden and it can be a great place to actually enjoy all the fruits of your gardening labor.

Some of the styles of garden furniture suit one material better than others but there are many different types. So purchasing furniture for the garden is not only for its intended use, but also as a decorative item to fit in with your overall garden design and theme.

Types of materials used for manufacture of garden furniture include wood of various types, with Teak wood being preferred due to it’s durability and beauty. Heavy metal furniture may not be entirely suitable if you want to move it around the garden often. Metal can also get extremely hot in warm climates so you will need cushions or to keep it shaded. Wooden furniture can be very heavy but wicker has the look and feel of wood whilst being lightweight and easy to move around.

Garden benches are always popular types of furniture because they look attractive and provides a place to sit with someone and enjoy the flowers and plants all through the seasons of the year. Wood is the most common material for garden benches to be contructed from and they last well in the weather if treated. Teak wood is especially popular, because it tends to stand up to the weather the best.

There are gardens that have cast iron benches in them that have been there for anything up to a hundred years. Cast Iron is a great material for somehow looking as though it has been in your garden for years and adding a romantic feel to the whoe area.

A swinging garden bench is a great pleasure as you rock back and forth in your garden during the summer weather. One unusual type of bench is designed to wrap around a tree or bush, and these take up less space in the garden while also providing a beautiful focal point.

Smaller than a garden bench or swing is a similar piece of garden furniture the garden chair. If you are looking for a quick and easy solution to your garden chair problem just use your patio furniture chairs as garden chairs. Cast iron is very popular but perhaps the most popular are timber and wicker furniture.

One of the easiest options is to get a garden furniture set which will have several chairs, a table and perhaps an umbrella to give you some shade. These patio furniture sets are great for entertaining or simply to enjoy an outdoor drink or a meal with your family.

When you are choosing your garden furniture, think first about the purpose of the piece and where you intend to locate it. If you have a garden seat or a garden bench you can sit outside anytime of the day or night. You can have a shaded seating area if you locate your garden seating beneath a tree. Should you be planning to entertain visitors in your garden, you may want a garden or patio table and chair set to keep on your lawn or patio area.

Our Helpful Suggestions for Choosing the Right Insulation

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 13 May 2009 10:17 am

Your home’s walls may not give you the level of protection you need. Without assistance they cannot give you enough defence against sound, weather, and pests. You need some kind of barrier to keep these things out.

While most homes these days will have some type of insulation they are not all the same. Most of the time older homes have fiberglass insulation. Fiberglass insulation is inexpensive and will give you very little relief from the weather and the high heating costs that come with it. There can also be negative health consequences to fiberglass exposure. Touching fiberglass can make your skin itchy and sore and breathing in small fibers from the fiberglass can cause reparatory problems.

There is another option: spray foam insulation. This gives you another option. It creates the best possible barrier between your home and the outside. Spray foam is made from liquid polyurethane which will firm up when it is put onto your walls. Since it is applied as a liquid it reachs every nook and crack in your walls. Less gaps in your wall means you have better protection.

The thick barrier made by spray foam insulation makes it difficult for bugs and other pests to enter your home. Spray foam insulation stays where you put it and it cannot be eaten through or torn as fiberglass insulation often is. Pests are also deterred from entering your home by the texture of spray foam insulation. It is also effective at deterring mold which can harm your home. You will also get protection from sound with spray foam insulation. Loud noises will be dampened by its thick surface. Spray foam insulation is a great idea for walls, ceilings, and floors. This gives you a nice sound barrier between floors. Since spray foam is more effective than fiberglass insulation it can also reduce your energy costs. These days people are looking for all sorts of way to conserve energy and spray foam can be part of the green solution.

Saving Time in the Kitchen by Using a Stand Mixer

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 6 May 2009 9:15 am

Kitchenaid’s classic stand mixer has been a mainstay piece of kitchen equipment for so many years that it is now iconic. While different manufacturers have tried to be competitive of late, Kitchenaid has kept innovating. They have added to their product line in order to be competitive with premium items for design as well as functionality.

If you only need a stand mixer every once in a while, then the entry-level Kitchenaid classic stand mixer will almost certainly meet every need that you have. The machine comes in either red or white, has a 4.5-quart bowl and a 250-Watt, 10-speed motor. The mixer comes with a wire beater, flat beater and dough hook. For basic cake making, cream whipping and occasional bread kneading, this mixer will do just fine. You really can’t go wrong with a Kitchenaid Classic Stand Mixer.

For those who want a little more out of their mixer, or who are a little more fashion conscious, the Kitchenaid artisan 5-quart stand mixers offer a little more bowl capacity and a more powerful 325-Watt motor that can handle pizza dough with ease. More importantly, the artisan mixer is offered in a couple of dozen colors; you will sometimes see additional limited edition colors at specialty retailers. You’ll pay around $75 more than for the Kitchenaid classic stand mixer, but if you bake bread regularly, or you have to have a particular color to match your kitchen, it can be a good investment. The kitchenaid artisan 5-quart stand mixer is really a good choice for many people.

When it comes to baking some people take it really serious. If this is the type of person you are, then you may consider investing in a Kitchenaid professional 600 mixer. For an additional $125.00 – $150.00 more than the Kitchenaid artisan 5-quart stand mixer, you will receive a 6-quart bowl and a beefy 575-Watt motor. The motor sports have a number of great features such as soft start to stop splattering and it also has automatic shut-off. The Kitchenaid professional 600 mixer comes in about 12 different colors, which include a few metallic finishes, so you should have no problem finding something that goes with your taste.

One thing that all of the Kitchenaid models have in common is extensibility through the addition of various attachments. These include a meat grinder (which I can tell you makes great country sausage), an ice cream maker, a pasta roller and a citrus juicer. Using the Kitchenaid attachments for these tasks saves valuable counter and closet space. It also means that you don’t have to worry about burning out the motor on a countertop device when you have a reliable stand mixer to drive things. The Kitchenaid Professional 600 Mixer is a choice for true professionals.

Regardless of whether you only bake occasionally or make pizzas all the time, you will find your ideal stand mixer in the Kitchenaid product line. Their mixers are wonder time-saving and work-saving gadgets that serve so many purposes. But best of all is when you can get someone else to buy one for you. (Be sure to include it if you are registered for wedding gifts.) At that point, a more costly model becomes a truly fine investment.

Renewable Energy Systems Don’t Have To Be Expensive

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Friday 1 May 2009 9:26 pm

Fed up with having to pay your electricity bills?  You are not alone.Every day a lot more people are turning to greener forms of energy to power their homes.Energy bills hit new highs in 2008 as oil prices around the world reached new records. For sure, as remaining reserves become rarer and more expensive to drain, oil prices are sure to rise high again.  So it makes a lot of sense to turn to other alternative sources of energy to save not only money in the future, but also to help save the planet as well.

When it comes to using renewable energy to power your home, either fully or partially, most people opt to use wind power or solar energy, as these are the easiest and most reliable options.  Often, homeowners will combine the two sources with a battery pack.  By setting up their system in this way they are assuring their supply. So when your solar panels re not keeping up with your energy requirements due to lack of sunshine, you can top up your power supply with wind generated energy.  And with a battery pack as part of the system, energy can also be stored to be used at times when the turbine or solar cells are not keeping up with your household demands.

If you want to install your own wind generator or solar energy systems, you basically have two choices.  You can either buy a system or believe it or not, you could actually make your own.  The latter option is cheaper, and makes sense if you have the time to do it.  There are a number of DIY renewable system kits available today, plus several manuals detailing how you can source your own parts and build systems from them for as little as a couple of hundred dollars!  That sort of cost has to be attractive!

To read more about building your own systems, and to see which kits and manuals I recommend, take a look at Build Your Own Wind Turbine and read my reviews there.
