Basics: How To Use Paint Color In Your Interior Design

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 18 March 2009 11:36 am

If what you want is a great and simple way to change your interior design, you should consider paint. It’s an inexpensive way to change the look and feel of a room. The first thing you will need to know is what paint color works best.

You should think about the room you plan to paint and how you mainly use it first. Even though there are colors that will only look good in specific rooms, there are no rules in choosing the right color. It’s not common for a kitchen to be painted pink, though finding that color in a bathroom or bedroom is quite common. Additionally the main living spaces in homes tend to be neutral colors. When picking out the best color for you, remember that the closest things to rules in interior design, are guidelines. While making your choice be sure to base it on your own style mostly.

Next, think about the way the rooms are designed throughout your household. Usually in Victorian style households, casual pastels, social, or polished colors tend to be not only suitable but pretty common. Neutral or casual base colors would likely go best in modern houses.

You should think about what kind of mood you want to put people in when they enter the room? If you want colors that seem to give more energy to the house, you should consider looking for a blue or red shade that works best for you (remember when using red it may be best done in moderation). If you’re really lost in this decision making process designers such as those at interior design central london can help you flesh out your needs.

Finally, use magazines and catalogs for inspiration. In those magazines, which designs were you more fond of, put you more at ease, gave you more of a welcome feeling? How often was the same color used on the walls? Perhaps you have always had the same neutral colors in your house but find that you are more partial to the red hues and designs you found in the catalog. You may want to think about increasing the amount of color in your home if that happens to you.

If you use your imagination and your own sense of what just “feels right” in your rooms, you will be able to choose the perfect paint color for your walls, giving your interior a whole new feel.

4 Pointers For Building Your Home’s Flat Roof

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 18 March 2009 11:36 am

The different kinds of flat roofs are Asphalt, turbo seal, chlorosulfonated polyethylene, ethylene propylene, modified bitumen, polyvinyl chloride, thermoplastic polyolefin, and modern membrane roof solutions. Flat roofs are responsive to human movement or the weather and cracks on the flat roof are a danger to the house. People should thus be careful while employing such rooftops as a living or entertainment area.

Flat roofs have one specific advantage over slanting or angled roofs in that the space above the roof can be turned into a garden or recreational area.  They are also easy to remodel and allow for convenient installation of solar panels should one decide to use these.

Some Pointers for New Flat Roofs

It is essential to attain regulatory approval from building authorities before starting work on a new flat roof since factors like the weight of the building material, span of the roof and snow landings must be taken into account to make the roof safe.  As explained at flat roof repairs the flat roof should customarily have a slight decline to drain water and snow from the roof surface.

Flat Roof Materials

The usual tar and gravel materials are still frequently used to build flat roofs. Despite the fact that there are very effective sealants available on the market today, the roof covering material should be of superb quality so that it can be laid as a sheet which makes the development of cracks less probable.  For timber flat roofs, the wood will no doubt be necessary along with a waterproof covering of course, since wood is not waterproof.  Modern liquid membranes such as Polyroof 185 are deemed as long lasting on the British Board of Agreement (BBA) listings, a body known to be a influential authority on roofing standards. See epdm roof for more information on flat roof materials.

Ensure a Long Life Span for Your Flat Roof

The life span of a flat roof is dependent on the type of maintenance given to the roof and at what intervals.  Some assessors say a maximum of 10 years.  Assembling the roof accurately  will lessen probability of corrections that impair the structure.  It is consequently crucial to have it done accurately right from the start.  Use high quality materials that are hard wearing.  Always make sure it stays clean and dry.  Drain any accumulation of water or snow quickly, if necessary by increasing the number of water drains and/or scuppers. Always fix cracks and leaks as soon as possible. Maintenance further requires restoring the delaminations, blisters or creases formed on the roof, whether they are leaking or not.  At present, infrared technology is used to take pictures at night to locate trouble spots in order to repair them right away.

Great Carpet Cleaning Tip

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 9 March 2009 10:30 am

As a professional carpet cleaner for many years I have dealt with all kinds of issues.  Here are some quick answers to some of the most common questions I get asked.  You can also find out more here on this Carpet Cleaning website our or Colorado Carpet Cleaning site.

How Often Should I Clean My Carpets?

The answer here always depends on the home owner.  If you have a few kids and the carpet gets daily wear then you should look at cleaning your carpets at least twice a year and maybe a third time for just the high traffic areas. If you wait untill your cart shows signs of dirt then it makes it that much harder to get cleaned and chances are not all of it will come out.

If you live alone and have no pets and not a whole lot of carpet traffic then most likely you only need to have your carpets cleaned once a year.  After I mention this I often get asked why the carpets even need to be cleaned once a year because these people are taking very good care of their carpets and they are immaculate. It’s a very honest question to ask and one most people would think of.

Picture this, you place a shirt on the ground and walk over it for an entire year.  Yes you may be walking over it with just your socks but it still gets very dirty.  After that year would you pick that shirt up and wear it.  The answer is of course not.Of course your going to wash your shirt first.  Carpets are great at hiding dirt.  You want to be able to sit and even lay down on your carpets with out having to worry about how dirty they are.

Irregardless of the amount of traffic your carpets get you want to have them cleaned at least once a year.  Almost all carpet manufacturers will also tell you to get your carpets cleaned once a year as well.  Doing so will really help the over all life and looks of your carpet.

Remodeling Your Bathroom – Don’t Make These Mistakes

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Tuesday 3 March 2009 12:08 pm

If you are planning to remodel your bathroom, it’s important that you carry out this project in a careful and precise manner. After all, it’s going to take some planning and some time. You want to make sure your remodel turns out beautifully. However, the task can be a little overwhelming at times. If you’re interested in helpful information that can help you as you plan and carry out your bathroom remodel, more than likely you’ve read many on what you are supposed to do. Well, here are some important bathroom remodeling tips on mistakes that you need to avoid so you are sure the remodel turns out the way you want it to.

Tip #1- Never Just Wing It
Many people seem to think that remodeling a bathroom is going to be easy. Well, it’s not as easy as it may appear. There are many things to consider and just winging it is not going to cut it. You’ll have to make sure that the fixture you choose fit, that the plumbing is done right, and you need to come up with a good layout for the bathroom. This is not something that you can do on the fly. Take the time to actually plan out your bathroom remodel for the best results. This way you don’t end up having to go back and do things over again.

Tip #2 – Don’t Buy Without Research and Comparison Shopping
Another mistake that you need to avoid is purchasing without doing research or doing some comparison shopping. After all, you don’t want to just purchase the first things you see when you are shopping for your bathroom. One of the best bathroom remodeling tips that you can keep in mind is to spend time considering various options and looking for a great deal. Take the time to get online to look at bathroom furnishings that are available. It makes it easy to shop and compare various options that you have. You’ll also want to spend some time looking for the best possible price. Comparison shop at various websites and stores to see where you can get the best deal on the products that you want for your bathroom remodel. This way you get what you want and you still save money too.

Tip #3 – Don’t Do it Yourself if You’re Not Skilled
If you have never done any remodeling or plumbing, then you might want to consider a contractor. You’ll end up costing yourself a whole lot more money if you try doing this when you don’t have the skills that you need. Home improvement and bathroom remodeling projects involve more than just changing out some old fixtures. Often plumbing is going to be required, and unless you really know what you are doing, you are better off to leave this work to a professional. While there are simple remodeling tasks that you can probably take care of on your own, if you are not sure how to do it and you don’t have the needed skills, don’t try doing it yourself. The money you spend on a contractor will be worth it and will save you time and agony.

Tip #4 – Don’t Start Without Figuring Out Your Budget
Don’t start out on your bathroom remodeling project without figuring out your budget for the remodel. Many people make this mistake and end up spending far more than they wanted to on the project. It’s better to first sit down and figure out how much money you have to spend on the remodeling project. Then you can work with supplies and fixtures that fit into your budget. You don’t want to end up breaking the bank when remodeling your bathroom, so make sure you have a budget in mind before you start.

Tip #5 – Don’t Hire Just Any Contractor
Last of all, when it comes to bathroom remodeling tips, another important mistake you need to avoid is hiring just any contractor. Need a contractor, then pick the best one you can find. Don’t hire the first person that you meet. You need to make sure that the contractor is qualified to do the job that you need done. It’s also important that you check to make sure that they are insured and licensed. Take the time to find out more about a contractor and check out his record and experience before deciding to make the hire.

Key Principles Of Efficient Flat Roof Repair

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Tuesday 3 March 2009 12:07 pm

I know from experience that finding a leak in a flat roof can be very difficult and expensive.  In our house it took 3 different roofers, making multiple visits, to identify the place in our flat roof that a leak was coming from.  The reason why identifying leaks in flat roofs is troublesome is that very often the place where the leak shows in the ceiling below can be quite far away from the place at which the leak is occurring in the flat roof itself.

The most obvious places to look for leaks on flat roofs are flashing or joints or seals of any kind.  Now, flashings are used at the point at which the roof joins non-roofing material such as brickwork.  As an example above our kitchen extension we have a parapet wall that is at one edge of the roof and flashing goes from the roof to the parapet wall.

As reported at flat roof repair, a capable roofer will first examine these flashings to isolate gaps through which water could possibly pass. Flashings are usually made of a metal material such as lead.

It is also usually difficult to test for leaks on a flat roof in the way you could on other types of roofs. The reason is because it could take hours for water to trickle down to the ceiling below from the moment you poured it on a suspect area on the roof. What this amounts to is that pratically, its very hard to test and then track multiple suspect places.  This is explained a bit more at the epdm rubber roof web page.

The key to flat roof leak repair is to know in advance the areas that are likely to be vulnerable. The best test regrettably is to carry out the work to close suspect gaps and then wait to see if the leak persists. So flat roof repair depends greatly on the intelligence, honesty and experience of the roofer you hire.
