Home Water Damage - When Disaster Strikes

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 29 June 2009 11:33 am

Even though water is a very essential element in our environment, during times of flooding it seems to be the bane of our existence. It is a very powerful and damaging event, when water can not be stopped. Water damage can destroy homes, businesses and lives. Or it can leave a constant reminder of its ability to take over and turn lives upside down.

During flooding or any water damage type of situation, there are some important guidelines you are going to want to follow.  If you find yourself in that situation due to a flood, probably the first thing you must do is make sure all your loved ones are safe and out of harm’s way.

Going through the aftermath of a flood or any sort of water disaster is very discouraging.  To your home, water damage is really troubling.  The damage can extend from the floor to the ceiling and everything in between.  When that happens, you must move quickly since time is of the essence.  The first thing to do immediately is to call a flood or water damage restoration company.  Don’t wait any length of time because mold and mildew starts to form immediately with 24 hours.  Also make sure you get the furniture and valuables out of any more damage from water.

Did you know that even though items were not in direct contact with the water they can still be damaged.  This is due to any water or humidity that is unusually high in the environment during these types of disasters.  This is where working with an experienced water damage company will know what to do with all your valuables.

During disasters like these, high humidity and general unsanitary conditions go hand in hand with this type of disaster.   So it is important to protect all your valuables immediately.  Remove all belongings and valuables as soon as possible so that a good water restoration company can help you determine if an item can be restored or fixed or if an item is ruined and needs to be replaced.

One thing homeowners don’t like doing is calling the insurance company and making a claim.  But that is exactly what the insurance company was made for.  Report the flooding and any damages immediately.  Let them worry about and paying for a good water damage company.  Do not try to do any cleaning and drying on your own.  By not worrying about trying to save every last penny, you actually will probably save more in the long run by having the restoration done right the first time.  Calling them will help you save more money then you will spend and help get your life back to normal as quickly as possible.

Benefits Of Solar Power House

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 29 June 2009 11:32 am

Solar power house is not a distant possibility, it is a reality now.By now you must be aware that the earth is running out of natural resources. One day there will be no potable water available for drinking, no more gasoline to use for the car, and no air conditioning. We need to use the natural energy resources wisely so as to slow down the exhaustion of the natural resources. Another good alternative is the use of solar power to power most of our simple daily home needs.

Solar power was first conceived as the main answer to the rural power demand. But having the solar panels are too expensive for a simple village to be economic viable. Today, with the great improvement of the technology, it has managed to bring the cost of renewable energy source down. With the technology and being able to build more powerful solar panles, solar power house seem to be a reality soon. This simply means that everyone in the rural areas can enjoy the greatness of having electricity, and not having to pay for it. And of course, solar power comes free!

What started in the begining as an alternative electricity source for rural homes, turned out to be a boon for the urban folks too. The fast rising costs of electricity and the increasing demand almost crippled the urban population with its escalated cost.

This cost factor has driven the urban people to consider solar power house as a possibility. There are million of homes enjoying the free electricity with the installation of solar power systems in their homes. Though the upfront cost is high, it represents only a one-time investment, for the return of a lifetime free source of electricity.

With such fantastic return of investment, there is no reason that you have not convert your place to a solar power house today. Now, we can save the earth.

Tips To Build A Steam Shower

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Tuesday 2 June 2009 9:08 pm

Fortunately, you don’t have to tear up your bathroom or break the bank to build a steam shower, but

If you want to build your own steam shower or have one built for you, there are some important things that you will need to do.

Should you choose to accept it, your mission is to…

  • cover the roof of your shower enclosure
  • seal the enclosure with a special door
  • install a steam shower generator
  • optional: include something to sit on, like a folding or fixed bench or a tiled bench

If you decide to build a steam shower suite, which includes…

  • a shower,
  • steam jet, and
  • built in seating,

it would take up about the same amount of space as an average bathtub enclosure.

You can convert a small walk-in shower into a steam shower, but the enclosure may not turn out big enough to include a bench. That means you would not be able to relax during your steam shower. You would have to stand up the whole time.

Steam Shower Structure and Sealing

The structure

The walls and ceiling of your enclosure must be made of waterproof material such as tile, marble, granite, limestone or fiberglass.

Cover the roof

Many standard shower stall doors stop short of the ceiling by a foot or so. You’ll have to…

1) buy a lightweight acrylic dome top, or
2) install a cover made of a material like fiberglass or stainless steel.

Steam condenses, so the ceiling should be sloped or curved. If the shower ceiling is flat, condensed water will constantly drip down on you.

Believe me, it’s not pleasant when a few of those drops hits you in the eye when you’re trying to relax and enjoy the moment.

Seal It

Your enclosure needs to be sealed very tight. If water vapor escapes, it will damage drywall, paint, or wallpaper.

You’ll also have to deal with rotting problems if steam penetrates into your walls, ceiling and floor.

That wouldn’t be a good thing.

Home steam showers are meant for enjoyment, not ruining bathrooms.

You can’t have a vapor-tight enclosure without the right kind of door. Manufacturers sell steam shower doors in a variety of styles and colors.

Now, what about the steam?

If you want to build a steam shower, obviously you’re going to need something to produce the steam, right? So…

You’ll need to install a steam generator.

You may need a plumber and an electrician for this job. The generator needs to be hooked up to the water line and a 240V line voltage.

Deciding where to place your steam shower generator can potentially be one of your biggest design challenges.

Steam showers are growing in popularity because people really enjoy the soothing relaxation that they provide.

After all, it’s a great option to be able to come home after a busy day or a tough workout and unwind in your very own steam shower.

Solar Panels Installation; Don’t Be Dependent on the Fuel Giants

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Tuesday 2 June 2009 9:06 pm

What started off as a few job losses has turned into a total global meltdown. The world is entering a new time. It’s during times of stress that often some of the best decisions are made.So maybe now is a good time to consider solar panels installation.

Why switch to solar power?
While the interest rates may be low, and you may be saving money on your mortgage, the cost of living is rising.  Food and fuel are getting more expensive by the week.  Solar panels installation could be a solution.  To try to get more people interested in solar power there have been incentives launched to help with the initial costs.  If you can still get onto one of these schemes you may find that a lot of your initial costs are set up.Also as these people are paid to actively promote solar power they are a great source of information and will be keen to help you.

What can you save after you have completed the solar panels installation?
It’s worth doing the maths before you launch into your solar panels installation project.  Firstly you should review what you are currently paying on your fuel bills.  Next you need to discuss with your solar panel manufacturers the expected output of your solar panels.  Finally you need to check in your area if you can sell back any unused power to your local electricity board.  If you do manage to product more power than you need then you will need to check the small print and see what sort of price you will get back and how this is affected by price rises.  Be careful of going for a fixed price agreement.  In the current situation the fuel prices are unlikely to fall so you would be better off getting a rate on a monthly or quarterly review.  Don’t get too excited, it is possible that you will not be able to produce enough power for your home and there will be no excess.

Going green is financially sensible.
Obviously your solar panels installation will mean that you are doing your bit for the environment, but there are other good side effects.  If you are able to sell excess power back to the local electricity board, you will probably find lots of ways of conserving energy.  The other big plus is that you will hugely increase the value of your property.

So there is a lot to be gained by looking into solar panels installation, and now is a good time to act.

Solar or Wind Powered Electricity?

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 25 May 2009 12:40 pm

Wind Powered Electricity

A good alternative energy solution seems to be wind powered electricity or should we focus completely on solar powered electricity? With more than one crises in the world (environmental, financial and a fuel shortage) people are looking for energy alternatives. And although a lot of the people with actual power are not yet convinced that this is the best time to go green, the common people understand it and they are searching for energy alternatives. But what alternatives are the best, solar or wind powered electricity?

Reasons to start looking for alternatives:

  • Lower or eliminate power bills
  • Be self sufficient
  • Get of the grid
  • Better world for our children
  • Better for our health in general
  • Fossil fuels like oil should be used as material to create for example plastic and not for energy usage.

Wind powered electricity is not a new alternative

Wind power is used for many centuries, in earlier days windmills where usually used to grind grain but also as lumber mill and for other purposes. Modern windmills are primarily used for wind generated electricity, even in Holland a country that is known for its windmills time has progressed.

There are two types of wind powered electricity, the first is produced by the power companies in large windmill parks and the second are residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7. Energy produced by the spinner blades is enormous and that is why wind is in both cases a perfect alternative. The wind powered electricity process requires less resources than solar power panels and they are simple to install.

Wind powered electricity is very good for the planet

This renewable source of power is a perfect alternative for fossil fuels and it will probably be one of the biggest alternatives we will use. The fact that wind powered electricity is hard to store is the only problem. You just can’t put it in a jar and open it when you need it. But batteries are improving rapidly the last few years and will become better and cheaper quickly. This means that it will be easier to store this kind of free energy.

Wind powered electricity can be used all over the planet

Another great advantage of wind powered electricity over solar electricity is that it is available in all corners of the world. And each country will be able to supply energy to there own people. This type of wind powered electricity on a large scale also creates jobs in countries because they need to be produced, placed and maintained.

Get off the grid

If you are able to use your own residential wind turbine you have a great advantage, it will reduce or eliminate your power bills and you actually do something to create a better healthier world. It depends on on your location what kind of system you choose because wind powered electricity is at least as good as solar power. There are excellent residential wind turbines like the Skystream 3.7 and that are not difficult to install and that are a perfect solution for many homes that are not urban located.

The best thing you can do if you are interested in a residential wind turbine system is to inform yourself about your options. At her website UnlikeNormalEnergy.com, Cathy Patterson, will provide you with all kinds of helpful information about alternative sources of energy like for example the Skystream 3.7 wind turbine or Solar Security Light .

Tips in Hiring a Pest Control Company

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 25 May 2009 12:38 pm

Though there are some minor pest problems we can handle on our own, large problems or pest problems in large areas will probably call for the aid of a pest control firm. But who should you contact? Are they all basically alike? Probably many in your area are advertised. Here are some tips in wisely choosing a pest control company.

First, the firm must be nearby. If you contract with a distant company, you will probably be charged extra for transportation costs every time they come. This could add up to a significant additional cost. For example, if you’re looking for Wisconsin pest control, it doesn’t help to know a good company in Texas.

The more important question is, are they honest? A family moved from the north to the south in the US and quickly learned that termites were a serious problem to wood structures. In fact a house could not be sold without a termite inspection. This pattern quickly emerged: when you call for an inspection, they will find evidence of termites. If you sign a one year contract with them and ask them to return within that time period, they will not find evidence of termites. Were they really honest? Who knows!

Honesty not only deals with what they say about your problem but also with what they say about their treatment. Do they have a guarantee? If so, do they back it up, no matter how many times they have to return to your place? You will learn this through their reputation with other people who have sought their help.

The third thing to consider is how prompt they are. On the one hand, your pest problem can’t wait weeks to be solved. How quickly can they arrive and treat your pest problem? On the other hand, a busy firm is a popular firm. If many are relying on this company for their pest control, they must have a good number of satisfied customers.

Fourth, how experienced is the pest control company with your particular problem? Some firms might say they can handle anything but in reality they have no experience with your particular problem, like how to get rid of bats. Be sure they can handle your problem effectively.

Fifth, some are concerned about the many chemicals that could poison other animals, a source of water, or damage the environment. Are they are aware of any residual problems from the chemicals they use?  How do they deal with this?

The pest control business is expensive. It requires vehicles, equipment, and training and these costs must be passed on to the consumer. Therefore, it will be an investment to rid your property of annoying or dangerous pests. But if you want to get rid of mice or any other pest, follow these points and you will likely find a company who will serve you well.

How to Organize Clutter

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Monday 18 May 2009 5:46 pm

Many people want to have an organized home without the clutter but they do not know how to go about getting rid of the clutter so it is frustrating. When a house gets to the point that it has too much clutter you end up spending so much time trying to de-clutter that you don’t get to the dusting or vacuuming. One is usually too tired to keep cleaning after all the time is spent on clearing away the clutter. But the good news is there are things you can do to control and organize clutter BEFORE it becomes overwhelming.

What clutter people’s homes the most is the piles of papers they have all over. Newspapers, mail, work papers, and the children’s school work easily become piles of paper around the house. There are a few ways you can organize yourself in order to avoid these stacks of paper cluttering up your home.

The mail and what to do with it is our first subject. Everyday when you get the mail go through it right away and the first thing you do is throw away the junk mail. The junk mail gets thrown in the trash before going back into the house for some people. Then the bills that need to be paid should be put in a “to do” folder. Some people create a space near the phone or computer desk to put a basket for all their to do papers or they have a drawer in the desk to put them in file folders. Then with the other papers you feel are important to keep you need to file them away right then and there and not wait for later. Clutter will remain if you wait until later because later gets here.

If you need to bring home work papers then you can use to same principle as mail with those papers. You can put your important papers in a file folder and then put your papers you need to do something about in another spot or folder.

To easily dispose of your newspaper you can place a bin next to your trash can under your kitchen counter. Once the newspaper is read then put it into the proper container. Then it is easy to take out both bins at the same time.

It is so easy for proud parents to get caught up in keeping every piece of paper their child brings homes from school. Those school papers soon turn into large piles that turn into clutter. Trying to keep the clutter down can be a challenge when you want to keep the school papers as keepsakes for your child’s memory book.A solution to this problem is to buy a box or container and keep it in a cabinet or closet close by. Then you can go through the kids schoolwork and determine which papers you really want to keep and put it in the bin. Instead of storing the large artwork and science projects you could take pictures of them and then throw them away. You can occasionally remove the papers from the closet and put them in a permanent place such as a larger box that can be kept in an attic or basement or even under a bed. This way you can organize clutter and still keep those precious memories that you and your child can look through and remember one day.

You have to get in the habit of asking yourself if the item that is cluttering your house is something you will use over and over again as you try to de-clutter and organize?” You MUST be honest with yourself though.Throw away anything you haven’t needed to use in a year because chances are you probably won’t ever need to use it again! You might consider giving your unused or unneeded articles to charity or you could have a garage sale to get fid of them. If you are not sure whether or not you should keep an item or not, store it for six months, and if you don’t use it in that time frame then get rid of it.

For your seasonal items purchase some large storage containers that can be stacked on top of each other and put them in an attic, basement, or garage. Always mark you storage containers well so that you will know what is in each one. No one needs the aggravation of having to search though every box to find the decorations they want. You will always know what is in the containers if you mark them well and you will also be able to find your items easily when you are looking for them. Remember if you see that their are stained, broken, or damaged items put them in the trash.

It may take some time to organize clutter around your house at first, but once you have set up a system and routine it will so easy to keep up the things that come into your home. Now enjoy your clutter-free environment!

Make Yourself Comfortable With The Sofa Bed

Posted by HomeDesigner | Home Improvements | Wednesday 13 May 2009 10:19 am

futons

If you have ever been stuck on an old sofa bed for the night, then you know how torturous it can be. Sofa beds, in the past, were sheer instruments of torture that caused a very uncomfortable night of sleep. It was not something that anyone looked forward to enduring. The mattresses on these beds were very thin and the rails would poke through, directly into your back. Comfortable beds they were definitely not.

Well friend, times have changed and today the sofa bed is not only quite comfortable it is also quite fashionable. They are much better for your comfort than futons and the bedding is an accent rather than the necessary padding that was required in the past. You can find these new sofa beds in either twin or double bed sizes. The difference is all in the size of the sofa or chair.

One of the greatest inventions of late is the oversize chair. Many oversized chairs now fold out into twin beds. The outside of the bed is very comfortable and can accommodate up to two people, yet the oversize chair is actually meant to be a single seating situation. Instead of a full sized sofa, many people are opting to purchase two of these chairs to accommodate their overnight guests. What is unique is that when guests come over they are treated to a great night’s sleep on twin beds that have thick mattresses and are actually very comfortable.

The added bonus of an oversize sleeper chair is that it does not take up as much room as a full sized sleeper sofa. It is also easier to move than the traditional full size sleeper sofa and can stand up to more weight in the center of the mattress. It has much more support and with its beautifully plush exterior it is a bonus to have in any living room, guest room or den.

No longer will your sofa bed be an instrument of torture. With a new guest bed you can place it anywhere and not have to worry about having an extra bedroom for your guests. This is a great advantage for those who do not have an extra room to turn into a guest bedroom. In the housing market today that is a great plus with so many people having to downsize their living situations. Try out the new oversized chairs and the new sofa beds. You will be surprised and delighted to buy one for your home.
